Why Gridlock Rules Washington + How Can WE Solve This Crisis?

Description

A Republican + A Democrat? Sharing the stage? Forging a friendship? Engaging across differences?

It seems like a thing of the past these days. The instinct today is to separate and isolate when we disagree, not to convene and collaborate. Civic division pervades, not civic discourse. Uncivil debates and tirades, not civil dialogue.

That's what makes our special guests – Former U.S. Congressmen David Jolly (R) and Patrick Murphy (D) – thoroughly riveting. They are former rivals who defied the norm. They transcended the red team, blue team tribalism and actually worked together on issues that supposedly have no common ground. Of course this puts them both at odds with the status quo – but it also means they can now share the unvarnished truth with you about what's broken and how we might fix it.

Join The Power of WE and The Village Square as we host this unique opportunity to get a more intimate inside look at Washington and to catch a glimpse of dynamic discourse across difference. We'll follow the Congressmen’s insights with roundtable conversations among those gathered. The Congressmen may even join your tables!

Modetated by Dr. Carol Weissert, LeRoy Collins Eminent Scholar and Chair of Civic Education and Political Science.

Light refreshments will be provided.

This special event is a part of Jolly and Murphy's Florida college tour and is the third installment in Power of WE’s Shared Spaces Series in which individuals spanning the spectrum of politics and life experience gather to interact across different perspectives and grapple with the defining questions and shared challenges we face.
