Detailed Description of Who’s Doing the Work?

More than ever, teachers are expected to teach the same academic standards to all students. The recent trend towards whole-group instruction—with grade-level, complex texts, in particular—has created instructional difficulties. Worried that their teaching has become too heavily scaffolded and too teacher-directed, many educators are concerned that the current distribution of teacher-student work is not doing enough to prepare students, especially those who struggle. Teachers are eager for strategies that engage students in difficult work, that make complex ideas simple, and that give students language for communicating about their reading processes.

In this workshop, Burkins and Yaris will share practical ways to get students “unstuck” by shifting the language of reading instruction, adjusting conventional prompts, and reframing scaffolding. They will equip you with new ideas for enabling readers who are likely to “slip through the cracks” or plateau in their reading growth. Considering the ways read aloud, shared reading, guided reading, and independent reading are connected, participants will explore “next generation” thinking for each instructional context and learn new insights into these instructional contexts. Burkins and Yaris will also make connections to mindset, student engagement, text level, and teacher language, considering when they do (and do not) help students develop efficient reading processes and enthusiasm for reading.

They are passionate about helping teachers navigate, understand, and implement standards-based instruction without sacrificing their inner teacher. In their role as staff developers, they work closely with schools and districts, facilitating professional learning, conducting in-class demonstrations, and developing curriculum.
