Event description

Description

In the last of the three market field trips for members of the Historic Foodways Society of the Delaware Valley, get a rare, behind-the-scenes tour of what has grown to be one of the East Coast's premium wholesale seafood markets started by a yound fish monger pushing products thorugh the streets of Philadelphia in the 1920s and which laster became Ippolito's, a corner seafood retailer. After Giuseppe Ippolito retired in 1974 and moved back to Sicily, Sam D'Angelo, who was managing Ippolito's, started a seperate wholesale business, Samuel's and Sons Seafood, a 60,000-square-foot facility on Lawerence Street. Today over 100 trucks make deleries over 300-mile radius, six days a week. The entire facility is kept at 35 degrees to keep the fresh fish fresh. The tour will highlight the entire process of receiving, processing and storing the fish. Following ther tour, we will enjoy a lunch prepared by the market's chef, which will focus on local seafood.
