When & Where
Whole Food Market - Milford & Solar Youth
Whole Foods Market - Milford: Who are we? Well, we seek out the finest natural and organic foods available, maintain the strictest quality standards in the industry, and have an unshakeable commitment to sustainable agriculture. Add to that the excitement and fun we bring to shopping for groceries, and you start to get a sense of what we’re all about. Oh yeah, we’re a mission-driven company too.
Solar Youth: Solar Youth provides opportunities for young people to develop a positive sense of self and connection and commitment to others through programs that incorporate environmental exploration, leadership development and community service.
Solar Youth Stewards (youth participants) are playing a key role in the restoration of the Pond Lily Nature Preserve, a 14-acre tract of water and woodland in the West Hills neighborhood of New Haven. The West River flows, impeded by a dam built in 1794 to power a grist mill, through the center of the Preserve. Over the past several years, New Haven Land Trust, which acquired the land in 1996, Connecticut Fund for the Environment/Save the Sound and other partners have planned for the dam’s removal to prevent flooding in the Town of Woodbridge and allow fish passage between Long Island Sound and points upstream from Pond Lily. The dam removal, slated for the summer of 2014, is the centerpiece of a broader transformation of Pond Lily, including reshaped river banks, native plantings, new trails, educational resources and removal of a significant quantity of solid waste. Solar Youth and its Stewards from West Hills, one of Solar Youth’s program sites, will help to coordinate the removal of solid waste from Pond Lily; contribute to the redesign of Pond Lily following the removal of the dam; and mobilize community residents to ensure Pond Lily’s stewardship over the long term.
