Event description

What is this training about?

This training will provide participants with the understanding and skills required to earn the MRc1 Building life-cycle impact reduction credits. Learn to utilize a whole building life cycle assessment and apply it to LEED v4 projects to optimize designs and measure and reduce the environmental impacts of materials.

The training is accredited by GBCI for 2 continuing education hours for LEED APs (BD+C) and LEED Green Associates (read more).

Why should I attend this training?

Because LCA is the most cost-efficient new credit in LEEDv4. LEED v4 BD + C includes a new materials credit, MRc1 Building life-cycle impact reduction. The most commonly available option for this credit is Option 4: whole-building life-cycle assessment, worth three points with a possible exemplary point. The same methodology also applies to the LEED 2009 NC pilot credit MRpc63 credit.

Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a methodology that allows the evaluation of the carbon and other environmental impacts of building materials over the entire lifespan of the building. This course introduces the key concepts and methods required to understand the basics of LCA. Building on the acquired knowledge, the course explains the requirements for earning the LCA credits in LEED v4 projects, how to develop a compliant design, and how to quantify and prove the required impacts using LCA.

Who is this training for?

This training is intended for LEED experts, architects and engineers working with LEED projects who have limited or no experience on whole building LCA. The attendees are expected to be familiar with general concepts of the LEED rating system, as well as have an understanding of the typical construction methodologies for structure and envelope, and be familiar with principal construction materials.

After attending you will be able to:

  1. Understand the whole building life cycle assessment methodology and the industry standards relevant to LEED v4’s BD+C, MR credit: Building Life-Cycle Impact Reduction

  2. Use LCA to achieve LEED v4 BD+C, MR credit: Building Life-Cycle Impact Reduction and LEED 2009 NC pilot credit MRpc63 credits.

  3. Understand strategies to reduce building LCA impacts to fulfill the requirements of LEED v4 BD+C, MR credit: Building Life-Cycle Impact Reduction and LEED 2009 NC pilot credit MRpc63 credits

  4. Employ day-to-day design software to enable a whole building life cycle assessment as defined in LEED v4 BD+C, MR credit: Building Life-Cycle Impact Reduction and LEED 2009 NC pilot credit MRpc63

Who is the trainer?

Trainer Mrs. Tytti Bruce-Hyrkäs (MSc.) is a building LCA expert with personal experience from over 100 building and infrastructure LCAs. She is also the developer of One Click LCA —the highest rated LCA tool for BREEAM. Every year she teaches approx. 200 certification professionals and other building sustainability experts around Europe to use building LCA tools for companies and educational institutions.
