Description

Hearing Voices: An Experiential Learning Workshop

Facilitator: Lauren Utter, Psy.D.

A 3 hour workshop in which participants learn about the experience of hearing distressing voices through didactics and using headphones for listening to a specially designed recording. During this simulated experience of hearing voices, participants undertake a series of tasks including social interaction in the community, and mock psychiatric interview. The simulation experience is followed by a debriefing and discussion period.

This curriculum has been developed by Patricia Deegan, Ph.D. and piloted for a wide range of mental health professionals including: Inpatient/outpatient psychiatric nurses, psychiatrists, social workers; psychologists; direct care workers in residential, day treatment and psychosocial rehabilitation programs; mental health administrators, policy makers; and police officers, academic faculty and students.

This training is not recommended for individuals who hear voices as the simulation experience can be triggering. Family members of voice hearers are encouraged to use their own discretion in registering for this workshop, as they too can find this experience upsetting.
