Event description

Description

The cemeteries of Boise and the Treasure Valley have thousands of residents. Many are historically famous and many just have interesting stories. You’ll learn that you don’t have to be famous to be fascinating. This presentation will discuss through photos of their graves those who had an impact on our city and state. Just of a few of the people we will discuss are: the former governor of Idaho and the man who blew him up, the Last Madman of Rock and Roll, the last professional lady bronc rider, the last man legally hanged in Idaho, the eight-year-old Boise police officer, the first Jewish governor in the United States, the man who had the first house in the country heated with geothermal hot steam and the United States' James Bond. Without concern for the weather or having to walk miles on uneven ground, we will visit the grave sites of these people and hear stories that may surprise you, make you happy, sad, or even chuckle a little. Ages 18 and up.

Where: JUMP Inspire Studio on the fourth floor, take a right out of the elevators and head towards the big Inspire sign.

David M. Habben is a Taphophile (one who has a special historical interest in cemeteries) and Cemetery Historian. He grew up in the Chicago area where he worked in law enforcement. It was his love for the blues and jazz music styles that led him to begin photographing the graves of Chicago area musicians. David moved to Oregon in 1973 where he began his career in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and moved to Idaho in 1986. He has traveled extensively in his career in EMS as a paramedic and instructor. For over 16 years, David has traveled the U.S. and international locations for his work, and l ocated and photographed historic and unique cemeteries and graveyards. He has presented "Carved in Stone" for Boise Community Education for several years, and presented at many genealogy and family history conferences and seminars throughout the U.S., and even at ghost and paranormal conferences. David is also an emeritus member of a paranormal investigation group in Idaho, and also gives historical tours at the Old Idaho State Penitentiary and of cemeteries in Boise.

What is your passion?

"My passion is teaching and sharing my knowledge with others. Besides my cemetery classes, I have been instructing EMS (paramedic and emergency dispatching) since 1986.I love learning and history. I enjoy learning new information and skills, and have a passion for all types of history. It's my love of history that lead me to the study of cemeteries, and also conducting historical tours of the Old Idaho State Penitentiary and local cemeteries. I love learning about things that many would consider trivial."
