Wet your Pants on the Kern!
The 27th Annual Wet & Wild Whitewater Wednesday will be held Wednesday, July 12, 2017 in Kernville at Riverside Park, on the Wild & Scenic Kern River; Whitewater, USA! It will be a fun-filled day of sunshine, water fights, soggy sneakers, and action packed rapids.
On this day only, the Kernville Chamber of Commerce, along with 5 commercial rafting companies operating on the Kern River, will sponsor the 27th Annual Whitewater Wednesday:
- The one-hour Lickety Split trip is an inexpensive introduction to whitewater rafting. The run is full of enough lively excitement to challenge just about everyone from tykes to grandmas. One-hour Lickety Split Class I-III, $30/person
- Two- Sequoia Splash Run ~ BIG WATER AHEAD! Here’s our two-hour “SEQUOIA SPLASH” raft trip (Class II-IV) on the “Wild & Scenic” Kern, California’s premium Whitewater River! $55/person
Lunch is included with all trips. Extra lunches are available for purchase. All proceeds go to the Kernville Chamber of Commerce to help fund community projects such as Whiskey Flat Days, Kernville Fall Festival and Christmas in Kernville as well as maintenance of community venues like the baseball field, and rodeo grounds.
All trips will be led by professional guides and equipment will be provided from the contributing outfitters.
Give this drenching treat to your employees, customers, family and friends, or another, unfortunately dry, loved one. This is a mid week bonus!! The water is back this year (thank you El Nino), making for some exciting trips. Minimum age is 7 years for the Lickety Split. One does not need to know how to swim. Everyone is required to wear Coast Guard approved life jackets which the outfitters provide. Swimsuits, shorts and a pair of old sneakers are the clothes for the day. We guarantee you’ll wet your pants on the Kern!

Where Do We Meet? Riverside Park in Kernville (by the bridge, the ONLY bridge, in town)
If you’re arriving in the western hamlet of Kernville from the Bakersfield (west) side, you'll see Riverside Park on your right . . . beside the Kern River. We're at the far end of the park, near the bridge. If you're instead coming from the east, from Ridgecrest and Mojave, you'll reach Kernville on the opposite side of the river -- turn left on Kernville Road (the first intersection in town) . . . cross the bridge a couple of blocks later, and . . . we're in the park on your left.
What Do We Bring?
You're going to get drenched, one way or another . . . and love it. Wear a swim suit or shorts and tennis shoes . . . or sandals with buckle straps (no bare feet and no flip-flops). Extra clothes don't keep you warmer -- but they'll get soaked and chill you, instead. Strip for wet-action and wear a big grin. Beware: oodles of eyeglasses reside in the river from unexpected spills and tumbles -- make sure yours have a secure strap (or, we'll have "Chums" straps for sale @ $5 or . . . staples for free!). Smear on some sunscreen and you're all set.
What DON'T We Bring?
Leave the towels at home -- it's not like going to the beach. Leave behind also: cell phones, billfolds, purses, rings, earrings, and the like, which don't have any purpose on the raft and which are mighty expensive to drop in the drink. If you like, we'll hold your car keys until you drip back ashore.
Rafts, life jackets, paddles, bus shuttles upriver, safety talk before you hop into the boats, and a river guide, smiling in the back of the raft (unless he/she momentarily disappears in the whitewater -- it happens). And, there's our barbequed hamburger lunch, too!
Yeah, What About Lunch?
Lunch will be ready between 11:00 and 3:00 -- you can enjoy yours either before or after your whitewater adventure, so long as you're within these times. We'll have your lunch tickets at our Check-In tables, 30 minutes before your trip.
What Should We Expect?
Expect the best fun in the whole world, so be sure to practice up on your best grins, ahead of time. Since it's mid-June, the day temperatures should be in the 80/90's. Since it's the Upper Kern, the brisk water temperature should be in the 40/50's. You'll be bussed upriver to start your paddle adventure and, you'll finish back at Riverside Park.
What if Someone Can't Come?
Emergencies and surprises do happen and, if so, you may substitute another suitable paddler -- no charge for the switch. However, there are no refunds either, and since this is a once-a-year community event, there's not much chance for a rain check. If you wind up with an empty spot, please consider your payment a contribution to the Kernville Chamber.
Great! When Do We Check-In?
Your trip and starting time is written below. Raise your hand and repeat after me: "I will not check-in more than 30 minutes ahead." This ordered timing lets us avoid much confusion. We'll have your lunch wrist bands waiting for you
and……..waivers to sign.
