Description

Unpacking White Privilege

In these times of heightened racial tension, white women and men are gathering to unpack how being white accords privileges not granted to people of color. On a daily basis white Americans enjoy freedoms that they take for granted, including the freedom to live, eat, shop and spend their free time where they choose. These privileges are not always available to people of color.

By recognizing how society opens doors for whites that are often closed to people of color, we are in a position to be more understanding and empathetic in the face of racial differences. Handouts and film clips included.

We will use materials from the "White Privilege: Let's Talk" curriculum that is published by the United Church of Christ, a progressive Christian denomination that is dedicated to working for justice. The curriculum is rooted in transformational dialogue. For more information about it, click HERE.

NOTE: This class will meet from 6 - 8 PM on six consecutive Tuesday nights, starting on October 17 and ending on November 21. (We hope to finish by 7:30, but due to the converations we'll have, we may run until 8 PM on some nights.) Due to the fact that the class emphasizes conversation and dialogue, we hope that everyone who registers can commit to attending at least 5 out of the 6 sessions.
