Description

WHITE, BLACK AND BLUE, by Will Chalmus and Steve Henderson. Director TBA. World premiere

Late at night a young black man kicks in an old man’s door, brandishing a gun. When the dust settles, it becomes evident that all is not as it seems. Not at all a criminal, Walter is as terrified as Joe by the situation he finds himself in after a misunderstanding turned into a confrontation that became a scuffle with an off-duty policeman from which he fled. The search for a way out of the stalemate that ensues is complicated by the arrival of Lou, the cop whose gun Walter grabbed in the struggle outside the bar where he had been playing. The balance of power shifts as we learn the identity of the woman whose drunken advances to Walter sparked Lou’s excessive reaction and the resulting altercation. Deeply held fears and biased expectations fuel tensions that are tempered by deft glimpses into the ridiculousness of their situation. Chalmus and Henderson bring their considerable playwriting skills to this intensely personal look at the roots of racial profiling and issues of race, trust, responsibility and last straws..

STC is proud to be the first to present this important work by two Massachusetts based writers..
