Description

Where the Brahmaputra Meets the MIssissippi!

OCTOBER 19, 2019 | 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM ROOSEVELT HIGH SCHOOL 4029 S 28TH AVE, MINNEAPOLIS, MN 55406

We are organizing our annual fundraising event “Where the Brahmaputra meets the Mississippi” (WBMM, 2019), which symbolizes the confluence of cultures. The mighty river Brahmaputra flows through Assam, India, a state known for its beauty, rich history and culture. The majestic Mississippi flows through the heart of Minnesota, known as one of the cultural and literary centers of the West.

We have two main goals for fundraising this year. One is to provide a platform to the local community in Minneapolis to interface with the culture of Assam, India. The other is to raise funds for education for children in rural Assam.

In the past, funds from WBMM has supported work with girls who work as domestic help without access to a decent quality of life. We have also supported work with women from traditional weaver communities who are left vulnerable by middlemen and abusive spouses. Support from WBMM has offered training for women to develop skills to start their own cooperative-based business and hone their financial literacy skills. In the past we have worked alongside local NGO’s.

We have a registered non-profit organization called Anaajoree (“thread of love which binds people/culture together”). The main goal of this organization, based in the beautiful hills of Dimou, Dhemaji, Assam, will be to provide education to girls in an area that has gained notoriety for human trafficking due to extreme poverty. We continue to work in partnership with Rotary Club to support work with 30 schools. Our long-term goal is to establish a vocational training center to provide skills training and capacity building for youth and extend the work to other parts of Assam with the help of local partner organizations.

Your support to this event will go a long way in impacting the lives of people with great talents and skills but little to no opportunity without our help.
We look forward to your support as well as your presence at the cultural celebrations on Saturday October 19th at 6pm
