Italo-Byzantine reinvention in Westminster

An afternoon tour of Westminster Cathedral (1895-1903), designed by John Francis Bentley, the seat of the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster and the Mother Church for Roman Catholics in England and Wales.

Thursday 30 May 2019, 1pm-4.45pm (option to join Evening Vespers in the Lady Chapel, 5pm-5.30pm)

Meet at 1pm on Cathedral Piazza outside the main entrance

Join Dr Rory O’Donnell, a Vice-President and a longstanding member of both the National Churches Trust and the Cathedral Art and Architecture Committee, this Ascension Day, for an inspiring tour of John Francis Bentley’s masterpiece.

Bentley was the most influential 19th century Catholic architect in Britain after AWN Pugin. His Cathedral has always satisfied critics and maintains powerful lasting appeal. Never intended to rival Westminster Abbey, its eclectic style is drawn from many sources and it provides a striking contrast to its medieval neighbour.

Dr O’Donnell will share expert insights to the design, plan and the ongoing mosaic decoration of the Cathedral. Very much a living place of worship, the relationship of architecture, design and layout to the life and function of the Cathedral will be explored.

As an addition, we are privileged to be invited for a guided visit to Archbishop’s House. Also designed by Bentley, it is the official residence of the Cardinal, noted for its magnificent Throne Room restored in 2001. Fr Peter Harris will guide us around the State Rooms of Archbishop’s House. He is Chairman of the Westminster Diocese Historic Churches Committee and led the restoration project of these areas of Archbishop’s House in 2001.

The priced tour includes entry to the Treasures of Westminster Cathedral exhibition, Tower Viewing Gallery and afternoon tea. Entrance to Archbishop’s House is free of charge.

Evening Vespers will take place in the Lady Chapel from 5pm. Guests are welcome to attend.

We are grateful for the generous help given by Dr Roderick O’Donnell FSA, Fr Peter Harris, Richard Collyer-Hamlin, Westminster Cathedral and Archbishop’s House.

This event will raise funds for our charitable work supporting churches and chapels throughout the UK.
