Event description

Description

Overview:

School Refusal is a common, but complex and difficult to treat clinical phenomenon. This presentation will review the current literature regarding the epidemiology and course of school refusal and will focus on outlining specific, practical treatment strategies and a 4 component comprehensive model of treatment: child-focused individual cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT), a dedicated group for children who are in various stages of school refusal/reentry, Parent Management Training/coping skills for parents, and active school consultation.

Objectives:

  1. 1. Demonstrate knowledge regarding the epidemiological data regarding the prevalence and course of school refusal, as well as the proximal and distal outcomes associated with school refusal.
  2. 2. Demonstrate competency in conducting a functional analysis of school refusal behavior.
  3. 3. Demonstrate knowledge regarding an evidence-based treatment template for both positively and negatively reinforced school refusal.
  4. 4. Demonstrate a knowledge of school-based interventions that may be used to minimize school refusal.
