Finding Meaning in Birth, Life, & Death

The 11th annual Wheelock Conference will bring together the whole Dartmouth community to discuss how the limits of human life—birth and death—shape everything in between.

Lunch is optional but all registered participants are invited to attend.

1:00 p.m. • Keynote Presentation
Ephraim Radner D'78

Rev. Dr. Ephraim Radner D’78 (M.Div., Yale Divinity School; Ph.D., Yale University) is ordained in the Episcopal Church and has served as a priest in Burundi and in cities throughout the United States. He is currently Professor of Historical Theology at Wycliffe College in Toronto and is the author of several books, including A Time to Keep: Theology, Mortality, and the Shape of a Human Life.

Small Group Discussion What is the Shape of My Life?

Panel One

Facing the Limits of Life

Panelists to be announced.

Dartmouth student panelists will reflect about their personal experiences with death, illness, and other aspects of mortality and how these encounters have shaped their thinking on life and purpose.

Panel Two

To Be Continued: Stories of Succession

Panelists to be announced.

“Human life, in its most basic significance, is bound up with the fact that we are temporal beings. We emerge from an inexplicable nothingness; and at their end, lives disappear into what is perhaps that same nothingness,” writes Ephraim Radner in his 2016 book A Time to Keep. Given the temporal limits of a life, we must at some point pass the ideas, institutions, and objectives we wish to keep alive on to the next generation. This panel will ask our alumni speakers to reflect on what it means to be a successor in a business, institution, or mission; how to think about preparing to pass your work or plans on to someone else; and how mortality shapes our purpose over the course of a life.

4:30 p.m. Concluding Mixer
