National structures as well as schools, colleges and universities will all need to change. Levels of disruption will vary but most students will have missed a lot of learning and the value of qualifications will be unclear for years to come, with major implications for teaching and learning.
Opportunities to socialise, develop friendships and to explore wider interests beyond the school curriculum will have been lost with learning and development taking different and often unpredictable forms.
We need to ask not how we can fit young people back into the existing system but how to change the system to meet their real needs.
