The recent racial turmoil in our country has put a spotlight on the Racial Divide that exits in America. Many of us have experienced much anguish over racial issues that we have seen play out in the media and in our very own Charleston, South Carolina. I believe that through Church leadership we can begin to heal.
This is why the Diocese of Charleston Office of Ethnic Ministries is sponsoring this gathering to reflect and dialogue on the racial divide as a pathway toward peace. This interactive experience is being facilitated by Kathleen Merritt and staff with the Office of Ethnic Ministries for the Diocese of Charleston. The St. Patrick Hosting Committee for the Heritage Celebration will serve as our host.
Last Year, Bishop Edward K. Braxton of Belleville, Ill., released a pastoral letter — “The Racial Divide in the United States: A Reflection for the World Day of Peace 2015.” This letter offers a tool for Catholics who seek to better understand the racial divide and address those issues that affect them. Our dialogue will focus on the content of this letter. Please download and read Bishop Braxton’s letter prior to attending. Letter can be found at http://sccatholic.org/downloads/ethnic_ministry/braxton_racialstudyguide.pdf
Our special guest for this dialogue is the author of the pastoral letter on the Racial Divide, Bishop Edward Braxton. This event is a pre-event for the Black Catholics Heritage Celebration on December 10, 2016 in Charleston. Bishop Braxton will deliver the Keynote for this gathering. To learn more and/or register for the Celebration call 864.331.2627 or email email@example.com
Please bring the letter with you to the gathering. The cost to attend is $15.00 to cover the cost of the meal. You must register for the event. $15.00 is due at sign in the evening of the event. Please note that this gathering is for all cultures and space is limited. Diversity in each gathering is key to its effectiveness.
