Event description

Description

In this 45 minute workshop/show and tell, participants who have previously participated in Workshop #1 or who have checked out a Q & A card to research can share their findings with one another and anyone who wants to attend as an audience member. This may take the form of storytelling, a live interview with a source, the reading of a publication, playing of music, or sharing a video or an object.

At the end of Public School, we'll be hosting an evening storytelling event where participants from all workshops can share what they found with the public. Use this workshop as time to share with others and get feedback.

Participants who have not attended Workshop #1 can generate their own questions with the help of those who have.

What's a Pop Up Library?

Read/Write Library creates Pop Up Libraries in partnership with other organizations and exhibits throughout Chicago to offer a local, first-person perspective through historical and contemporary publications by other Chicagoans. This library is rewritable, and encourages visitors to add their own stories or ones they've found in their neighborhood through grassroots research.

What Age is this Appropriate For?

These grassroots research workshops are intended to cross generations, but are most appropriate for teens and adults. We strongly encourage parents with younger children (or even teens) to participate in the workshops together.

Can I Participate in More than One Workshop?

Absolutely! What We Found - Pop Up Library Grassroots Research Workshop #2 repeats every second Saturday of the month during the run of the Public School exhibition at Hyde Park Art Center. You can attend as many of these workshops as you want, each one will cover different subject matter and you will have an opportunity to gain perspective from a variety of participants. You do not need to have attended the other workshops to participate.

About Public School @ Hyde Park Art Center

For 'Public School' Jim Duignan, of the Stockyard Institute, works collaboratively with artist and educator Rachel Harper, of Seen + Heard to create a imagination-inducing installation of curious objects - including a fort, a stage, a tower, a piano, and a decommissioned school bus - to construct a new playground for all ages. At a moment when the Public Education System struggles to exist, Chicago artists ask: where is learning actually happening in this city and who gets to determine what we should know?
