Description

OVERVIEW

* LEVEL - Beginner

Add a little fun on your clothes, hat/cap, backpack, belt, or put it up in your room for a cool light show with an Arduino and an LED strip.

In part 1, learn how to program a controller to control patterns and colors of an LED light strip, and in part 2, we will add a sound detection module to make LED lights respond to sound & voices. Display it on clothing, bags, headwear, or use it as a visual meter for sound, all controlled with a micro controller. You can design different LED light patterns with different colors with just some simple code changes you make in the micro controller.

Depending on your familiarity with these things, and how long you want to stay around to "play" with it, plan for about 2 to 3 hours, then you are welcome to stay afterwards.

Lunch and snacks will be provided.

PART I

You will learn how to put together the parts, how to solder, and how to program the micro controller (we will be using the Arduino Nano) to control the LED lights.

We will provide you with all the parts and tools, and you will learn basic electronic wiring & soldering skills, with step-by-step instruction on programming the controller using the Arduino program in our computer lab. You can bring your own laptop as well.

If you are bringing your own laptop, please download and install the Arduino IDE beforehand.

At the end of the day, you can take home your project. You will have

  • Arduino Nano Micro Controller
  • 1 meter long LED light strip of 30 pixels
  • Battery pack power supply

PART II

Bring it back for Part 2 next month where we will add on a sound detector module, change the Arduino coding, and see how the LEDs react to the sound and voices around you.

PARTICIPANTIONS

The event is free, but if you register, please do show up so seats aren't taken away for those that want to participate.

The event is for all ages, but we do want to focus on youth 19 and under, and probably minimum of 10 years old, as there really isn't "playing" involved.

*PARENTS*, please stay with your younger children. You are welcome to work as a team on the project.

VOLUNTEERS

If you are interested in helping out, we need people familiar working with small electronics and Arduino, and general helps. Please sign up here >>
