Description

The Old Franklin Schoolhouse is excited and proud to present “WHAT PETE TAUGHT WOODY: An intimate portrait of the friendship and working relationship between Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie.”

This program will be presented by Nora Guthrie, a Grammy Award winning producer and the President of Woody Guthrie Publications. Since taking the reins of her father’s seemingly inexhaustible back catalog of unpublished writings, artworks, and song lyrics in 1992, Nora Guthrie has not only helped preserve the legacy of Woody Guthrie (1912-1967),but she has expertly extended it in improbable but wonderful ways. Some of Nora’s accomplishments are recorded here: https://www.woodyguthrie.org/norapress.htm

2019 is a particularly special year as it marks the centennial of Pete Seeger’s birth! To honor Seeger’s 100th birthday, Nora has created this special multimedia presentation featuring rare and intimate interviews with Seeger, in which he recalls his working relationship with Woody Guthrie. The program also promises to highlight archival materials, photographs, and music – providing insight into the two folksinger’s significant friendship; a friendship which ultimately played a huge role in the Folk Music Revival of the 50s and 60s.

It’s in this light that this program is a fundraiser for the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, the non-profit organization founded by Pete & Toshi Seeger.

Here’s what you should know if you wish to take part in this wonderful event – and we sure hope you do:

The Date: Saturday, June 8th, 2019.

The Place: The Old Franklin Schoolhouse, 491 Middlesex Avenue, Metuchen, New Jersey 08840

The Time: Nora Guthrie’s presentation is scheduled to begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. and will run for approximately ninety minutes. This will be followed by a half-hour Q & A session with Nora. Following the presentation, there will be a short break with light refreshments served. For those folks who wish to stay on a little longer, we hope to follow with a mini-Hootenanny of Guthrie songs and obligatory “Seeger-style” folk-era sing-a-longs. We plan on featuring a few hometown artists (TBA) plucked from Metuchen’s folk music scene. Bring your voices!

The Cost: In the spirit of inclusiveness, we’ve decided there will be no formal admission charged for this event. We do wish to remind everyone planning to attend that this program is a benefit for the Clearwater organization. The Clearwater is the sloop-driven non-profit that has accomplished so much in its half-century of existence to promote environmental activism and community-building. Nora Guthrie is generously donating 100% of her speaking fee to Clearwater. We hope and ask that if you have ever been moved by the music and the common man American ideals exemplified by Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger that you too will see fit to donate whatever amount your pocketbook allows on June 8th. We will stage a collection jar at the Schoolhouse and 100% of all profits will be donated to Clearwater. Everyone working behind the scenes on this event, from the bakers to the musicians to the technical and kitchen crews will be donating their time and talents to help maximize this fundraising.

SEATING LIMITED TO 60 - PLEASE RESERVE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

The program “WHAT PETE TAUGHT WOODY” is hosted by the Borough Improvement League, proud owners of the historic Old Franklin Schoolhouse, and is being made possible with the very generous support of the Metuchen Arts Council (https://www.metuchenarts.com/
