(What is) The Nature of Los Angeles Series

PANEL 1: ON THE UNEASY EARTH

We have certain expectations about how the earth should behave. Terms like Terra Firma speak to its solidity, and drawing conventions represent the ground plane as a static line upon which buildings and structures may reliably stand. But when the earth moves, slides, dissolves or levitates, these expectations can prove themselves to be unexpectedly, and sometimes lethally, naive. Through presentations and discussion with designers, engineers, artists and scientists whose work engages this dynamic medium, The Committee on the Environment will investigate what it means to live On the Uneasy Earth.

Date: Wednesday, October 24, 2012, 7:30 pm .

Location:

Penmar Park bleachers, 1341 Lake St., Venice, CA 90291, in front of the dirt pile (pictured above near the corner of Lake and Penmar), a Prop-O-funded water filtration project under construction by the Los Angeles Bureau of Public Works.
