Event description

Description

Gold, oil, blood. Western films abound with dreams of striking it rich by pulling treasure from the landscape. Curated by Josh Garrett-Davis, the Autry’s Gamble Assistant Curator of Western History, Popular Culture, and Firearms, the films in September, October, and November explore how characters respond to “booms” in natural resources. In conjunction with the LA RAZAexhibition, these films also demonstrate the deep Western interconnections across the U.S.-Mexico border.

This Texas epic follows a powerful ranching family headed by Bick Benedict and Leslie Lynnton, as they move from a time of agriculture to the era of big oil. The culture’s discrimination against Mexican-American workers also features heavily in the story.

Directed by George Stevens | Starring Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and James Dean

Screened in 35mm
