About this event
Join Formed Families Forward's Kelly Henderson, PhD and Beth Spivack, MSW for a virtual collaborative book study designed for foster, adoptive and kinship families and the professionals who work with them to learn together.
The book selection is What Happened to You?: Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing by Bruce D. Perry, M.D., PhD and Oprah Winfrey. In this book Oprah Winfrey and brain development and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry discuss the impact of trauma and adversity and how healing must begin with a shift to asking "What happened to you?" rather than "What's wrong with you?" The book uses storytelling to explain brain science and make complicated biological concepts accessible. We will discuss how problematic behaviors in children and youth exposed to trauma are actually survival brain adaptations and how this understanding can change the way we engage with children and teens at home and at school. This understanding of brain development can be used by caring adults to create resilience in children and help them overcome the effects of trauma.
NOTE: Registrants must commit to participating in three virtual book study sessions 7- 8:30 PM on Wednesdays, January 18, February 8 and March 1, 2023. Free copies of the book will be mailed to participants. Log-in information will be emailed in advance of the book study sessions.
