What Every Therapist Should Know

Divorce in the State of California

This training is designed to educate therapists on what it means to divorce in the state of California. By learning the steps, the vocabulary and the structure of this stressful and often traumatic process, we can demystify the process and better prepare ourselves to provide more specific support to our clients along the way. This knowledge will help us to anticipate where our clients may find their biggest challenges and identify the skills they need to hone to successfully navigate the end of a relationship. In doing so, we ensure our ability to practice ethically and within the bounds of our license while meeting a high standard of service and care for our clients.

*This training does NOT qualify participants to offer legal or mediation services. It is intended to provide the overview of what our clients face as they dissolve partnerships to ensure the ability of therapists to create effective treatment plans that address client needs as they transition out of their primary relationship.

During this unique training participants will gain:

• An overall understanding of the legal definitions of marriage, separation, divorce and custody, including proceedings involving unmarried partners and parents.

• The general process of divorce including timelines, steps in process and potential conflicts and stressors rooted in legal proceedings.

• An ability to clearly define the roles of various parties involved in divorce (therapist, client, attorneys, mediators, judges, evaluators, etc).

• A general knowledge of alternative dispute resolution processes.

• An overview of the variables related to child support, custody and visitation.

• A list of “tips and traps” for therapists as related to divorce.

• An awareness of the common complications clients face in separation and divorce.
