If you thought writing, revising, and selling a novel was hard, wait until tax time comes around! As much as we like to think that a writing career is a purely creative endeavor, successful authors also tackle a variety of behind-the-scenes administrative concerns. You need to know how to start and run a small business, keep records of your royalties and expenses, handle your taxes, and other not-so-fun but extremely important tasks.

In this practical workshop, taught by a corporate tax attorney and business law professor, you’ll tackle these tasks head-on. Discover the distinctions between writing as a hobby and writing as a business (as far as the IRS is concerned). Finally understand the business entities available for authors, the legal steps to create them, and the differences in how each entity is taxed. Learn about the common types of income and expenses for authors—and maybe even save yourself some money next April!

Many writers are scared of business—but you don’t have to be one of them!
