Description

Please join us for a moderated panel discussing the 2019 economic and investment outlook. Q4 was a turbulent time for equities and real estate values have peaked in many markets; what lies ahead in 2019? The panel, a representation across various financial disciplines/expertise, will discuss the outlook for 2019 and various investment strategies given where we are in the cycle.

John Mazur WG '99 - Panel Moderator
Mr. Mazur brings a diverse public equity investing career to the panel. After receiving his MBA in Finance from the Wharton School in 1999, John accepted a position with Nicholas Applegate in San Diego as an emerging markets analyst covering Eastern Europe and Russia. From there he was promoted to technology analyst for the US small cap growth and mini cap growth funds, including lead analyst on all small cap tech IPOs. After the acquisition of Nicholas Applegate by Allianz Global Investors, Mr. Mazur stayed on to co-manage the Nicholas Applegate/AGI Small Cap Value Fund which achieved the prestigious 3 year Morningstar 5 Star rating. Since his time at NA/AGI, Mr. Mazur has managed family, private and institutional funds. Recently, he concluded a seven year tenure managing a USC endowment fund which achieved a 94% return vs. the benchmark S&P 500 84% return in the same period. He received his B.S. in Biology from USC, where as an NCAA football student-athlete, he was also the starting quarterback. He splits his time between Los Angeles and San Diego.

Greg McKee
As Chief Executive Officer of CONNECT, Greg manages an eosystem that provides people, technology, and capital to the San Diego innovation and venture community. CONNECT is central to the innovation economy of San Diego. Prior to CONNECT, He was co–Founder of Global Bio Link, a global Specialty Pharma company focused on the commercialization of novel and niche compounds in markets outside the United States. Prior to Global Bio Link, Greg was Chairman and CEO of Akela Pharma Inc. and its predecessor company, Nventa Biopharmaceuticals. Previously, Greg held roles as Head Corporate Development, Valentis, Inc., and Senior Management roles with Genzyme Corporation in the US and Asia. Greg lived and worked in Japan and in Singapore for nine years and speaks fluent Japanese. An active member of Young Presidents Organization (YPO)/World Presidents Organization (WPO), Greg earned a B.A., Economics from the University of Washington, a M.B.A from the Wharton School, and a M.A., International Studies from The Joseph H. Lauder Institute of the University of Pennsylvania.

Shawn Wansted
Mr. Wamstad is an Investment Advisor in Bernstein’s San Diego office. He provides investment planning and management for closely-held business owners, foundations, endowments, high-net-worth individuals, and families. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Wamstad was a principal and the chief operating officer of Covest Capital Partners, a $500 million private commercial real estate investment firm where he was responsible for strategic planning, business development, oversight of capital raising efforts and served as legal counsel. Previously, he served as general counsel for USA Properties, a private commercial real estate investment firm, and before that he was an attorney with Blanchard, Krasner & French, advising emerging companies and high-net-worth clients regarding corporate finance, real estate, securities, intellectual property and estate planning. Mr. Wamstad earned a BBA in marketing from Texas Christian University (Magna Cum Laude), an MBA in finance from the University of San Diego School of Business, and a JD from the University of San Diego School of Law. Mr. Wamstad is also a licensed attorney (inactive) and real estate broker in the state of California.

Grant Van Cleve
Grant, the Chairman of the prestigious Tech Coast Angels, is involved in 59 start-ups, serving as a board member or formal advisor in 15 of those. He is also CEO of one of those companies, Buy It Installed, Inc, which uses artificial empathy to automate the installed-sales process, allowing any manufacturer or retailer to bundle national installation at the point of sale. Alongside SoCal startups, Grant also does real estate development locally and in Eastern Europe, and clean-tech and education projects globally. Grant pours time into catalyzing the entrepreneurial ecosystem locally and in the developing world, and has leadership roles in his church and in local politics. He returned to CA in 2010 after studies at Wharton (W91) followed by 19 years in Europe. Grant is on the OC50 list of top influencers in Orange County, CA.

Greg Salley
Greg is the Managing Director of Equity Residences, which manages a portfolio of real estate private equity funds. At Equity Residences, Greg is responsible for raising capital and the overall investment strategy in the U.S. and internationally. Prior to his career as a real estate investor, Greg had executive management experience in private equity, business development, business strategy and mergers and acquisitions; both US and international. He holds a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is an A.T. Kearney alum.
