Event description
TUESDAY 21 MAY 2019, LUNCHTIME EVENT AT THE INTERCONTINENTAL GENEVA

About this Event

The side event “What will it take to address the growing cancer burden?” will look at how access to cancer screening, diagnostics and treatment needs to be at the forefront of UHC. How best to do this? What role should healthcare companies play in tackling access challenges to cancer care?

The global cancer burden has risen to an estimated 18.1 million new cases and 9.6 million deaths in 2018. Well-functioning health systems that protect individuals and communities from the economic burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are essential to accelerate completion of the Sustainable Development agenda by 2030. The WHO’s latest review on the progress towards their ‘triple billion target’ highlights major efforts in recent years in addressing the increasing impact of NCDs. Even so, expediting progress towards SDG 3, ‘Healthy lives and well-being for all’, requires more collective action at national, regional and global level. Beating NCDs requires coordinated action and partnerships among governments, civil society, private sector, academia, business, and other stakeholders to effectively promote health for all.

This event brings together policy makers, patient advocates, healthcare professionals, and payers from Africa, Latin America, Asia Pacific, Europe and the Middle East. Together, they will explore how access to cancer treatment needs be at the forefront of UHC, with a special focus on the role healthcare companies can and should play in facilitating access.
