The Limerick Writers' Centre
presents
WH Auden on WB Yeats – A talk on Auden's views on Yeats
by Mike Douse

Limerick Writers’ Centre is delighted to announce another ‘Great Writers: Great Literature’ talk. Mike Douse of the Clare Poetry Collective will deliver a 55-minute talk entitled WH on WB – as presented by him to the Yeats Society in Sligo in 2013.

The talk will take place Monday 31st July at Nelly’s Corner cafe, 46 Nicholas Street, at 7.30pm

“Auden’s attitude towards Yeats is fascinating and somewhat frightening”, explains Mike. “He was an artist perpetually in conflict with his gift. Was it perhaps a discontent with his own poetic validity that drove not only Auden’s deliberate disreputability but also his lifelong preoccupation with Yeats? Auden insists that poetry changes nothing – it makes nothing happen. But, to a very significant extent, the poetry of William Butler made Wystan Hugh happen.”

Mike Douse has been involved in international education programmes in some sixty-six countries, for well over half a century. He is especially conversant with educational research and its practical application, in which key area he has published and presented extensively and significantly. In the 1970s, Mike was among those who established the World School Students Debating Championships. Mike has also published two collections of poetry, Old Ground and Gone to Ground, along with numerous articles and reviews, together with his recent book An Enjoyment of Education. He is a keen member of the Clare Poetry Collective and lives in Ennis with his dear wife Patricia.
