Description

Have you been wondering about the freedom of education in the Netherlands and how do Dutch cities deliver their approach to education? Are you curious to know how Amsterdam is planning to achieve equal opportunities in education for all children, regardless of their socio-economic background or native language? Are you in search of inspirational practices on how to prevent obesity of children or deal with super-diversity in schools or bring educational equity in deprived neighbourhoods? Then search no more and join us for the autumn meeting of our WG Education to Amsterdam on 7-9 November 2018.

Amsterdam is a city described by the diversity and heterogeneity of its population. This diversity is clearly visible in the schools around the city, some of which have up to 90% of students with migrant background. Many children are native in a language different than Dutch. Some live in deprived neighbourhoods where an accumulation of problems may lead to educational disadvantage.

To address such educational disadvantages, Amsterdam is investing in increasing the equality of opportunities in education from an early age so that all children, regardless of their socio-economic background or where they live in the city, can benefit from quality and inclusive education and can develop their full potential in a healthy life. Equality of opportunities, inclusive schooling, countering segregation and developing healthy lifestyles are key elements of the Amsterdam approach to education. This approach is fully in line with the European Pillar of Social Rights (principle 1) providing that everyone has the right to quality and inclusive education, training and lifelong learning.

Over three days of site visits, presentations and workshops, participants will learn about Amsterdam's strategy to increase equality of opportunities in education. Through field visits to preschools, primary schools and secondary level vocational colleges, participants will have the chance to discuss with practitioners and discover their good practices in:
a. early childhood education and care, with focus on language learning through play
b. new ways of teaching in primary education, with focus on whole child development to form creative, responsible and engaged citizens
c. managing 'super-diversity' with focus on triangle home-street-school
d. preventing child obesity through comprehensive healthy weight programme
e. developing 'focus schools' to give extra support to primary schools in deprived urban areas

The study visit will follow the 'critical friend review' methodology whereby the visiting cities will not only learn from the good practices showcased, but will also provide suggestions and recommendations to Amsterdam on how to further improve its educational policy and practice to get ever closer to achieving equality of opportunities in education in the city.
