WFW Brown Bag Lunch and Learn: Women’s Pathways to Prison
and Their Needs Upon Returning Home

Presented by WFW Member, Patricia Van Voorhis, Ph.D., Professor Emerita of Criminal Justice at the University of Cincinnati

Wednesday, August 28th, 12:00 - 1:30 p.m.

The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina

Over the past 20 years, women have been the fastest growing segment of the prison population. In comparison to men, women’s pathways to crime are more likely to involve histories of abuse and trauma, mental health and substance abuse. Upon release, these needs in addition to poverty, parental stress, dysfunctional relationships, and inadequate childcare, place women at high risk for returning to prison. Unfortunately, criminal justice agencies, prisons especially, have been either unresponsive to these concerns or ineffective in their efforts to address them. Community agencies/programs and their supporters may be uniquely situated to help.

Bring your lunch - and a friend! - and join us for this informative event.

Please register by Friday, August 23rd.

Women for Women was formed in 2005 to improve the lives of women and girls through effective charitable giving. An initiative of The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, Women for Women has distributed more than $3.8 million in grants.
