Tue, April 11, 2017, 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM PDT
Wetland Round Up Field Trip Workshop for Teachers and Parent Volunteers in NORTH SAN JOSE (ALVISO):
We are delighted you will be participating in the Wetland Round-Up field trip program at the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Environmental Education Center, located in North San Jose (Alviso), California.
After this workshop you will be able to:
- Describe the 5 habitats on the Refuge
- Identify 2 endangered species that reside on the Refuge
- Lead a small group, hands-on activity on your school’s Wetland Round-Up field trip using a simple script in a “Do, Read, Ask” format that we provide (see your teacher for more details)
- Plan your school’s Wetland Round-Up field trip (teachers)
We will spend a good portion of the workshop outdoors, rain or shine, exploring the Refuge habitats. It can get WINDY, cold, and muddy. Please come prepared with the following recommended clothing:
- field clothes (clothes you don’t mind getting dirty)
- comfortable walking shoes (shoes you don’t mind getting dirty)
- a warm, water-repellent outer layer (windbreaker, jacket, etc.)
Please arrive promptly and plan to stay for the entire program (2 hours). Note that we spend a good portion of the workshops outdoors, rain or shine, exploring the Refuge habitats, so make sure to wear several layers of clothing and appropriate footwear.
Returning and New Teachers
Attending a Field Trip Training is a requirement of participating in our dynamic educator-led field trip program. Classroom teachers that have not yet attended field trip training MUST attend a Field Trip Workshop.
It is highly recommended that returning teachers attend one of these workshops every three years. We strongly encourage returning teachers to attend the workshop with their parent volunteers.
Please Note: A new edition of the Salt Marsh Manual was released Fall 2008. If you have attended training in the past but do not have a Fall 2008 Edition of the Salt Marsh Manual, you MUST attend a Field Trip Workshop prior to your visit. If you have attended training previously, please bring your most recent edition of the Salt Marsh Manual. To save resources, we will provide you with a packet of new activity pages which will replace old pages in your manual. By participating in this field trip you are taking an active role in your students’ educational experience and connecting children to the outdoors. We thank you for your time and commitment to learning about the Refuge’s resources and how you can help protect the Refuge.
**New teachers are asked to stay until 6:30 pm to learn how to plan the field trip and to review the Salt Marsh Manual: An Educator’s Guide.
School Volunteers (Parents)
We also request, and strongly recommend, that School Volunteers that will be leading an activity attend a workshop. The School Volunteers will assume the role of Activity Leaders who will teach your students on the day of the field trip. Their attendance at an orientation workshop will greatly improve the quality of your students’ experience.
