Event description

Description

After 4 successful years at Polesden Lacey, we are very excited to have the opportunity to hold our final festival of the season at nearby West Horsley Place. Inherited by Bamber Gascoigne in 2014 from his great aunt, the Duchess of Roxburghe, this Grade I listed, ancient estate has great historic significance and a fascinating story. West Horsley Place is now owned by the Mary Roxburghe Trust; a charity committed to restoring the house and estate and to create a vibrant centre for the performing and visual arts and the teaching of crafts.

The grounds present the perfect setting for this festival – visitors are guaranteed a fun, enriching and memorable day out with the chance to sample a wide range of food and drink from 40 producers and a rare opportunity to wander around the gardens and learn about the intriguing history of the house. For the first time, limited access to the house will be granted to members of the public, giving visitors a chance to step back in time and follow in the footsteps of the likes of Henry VIII, Carew Raleigh and several distinguished, high society families.

In our Talks and Tasting Hub, visitors will get to meet and talk to talented chefs and sample their food. There will also be plenty of children’s activities to keep them entertained all day.

Ticket Types

Festival and Garden Entry

More than just a garden visit: access to the house is limited, so with this in mind, our Garden Stewards will be on hand to tell you about the history of West Horsley Place and the Mary Roxburghe Trust's plans for its future, while you explore the five-acre eighteen-century walled gardens. The gardens are not usually open to the public, so this is a rare opportunity to see them at the start of a restoration journey. Areas to explore include the Orchard, the Crinkle-Crankle Garden with its famous serpentine wall, and the Formal Garden featuring box-hedged avenues, a historic dovecote, and rose garden. Money from ticket sales will support the Mary Roxburghe Trust, contributing to their mission to restore West Horsley Place, its grounds, and outbuildings.

VIP Champagne House Tour, entry to gardens and festival

VIP tickets include admission to the gardens, exclusive access- with a glass of champagne - to an exhibition in the Stone Hall about West Horsley Place and the Mary Roxburghe Trust’s exciting plans for its future and a guided tour of the house. This a rare opportunity to explore the historically important and beautiful but dilapidated Grade I listed West Horsley Place in its current state before a major campaign of restoration work starts for which the Trust is raising funds, to which income from ticket sales will contribute. Learn about its development from the fifteenth to 19th centuries, as well as its famous visitors including Henry VIII and Elizabeth I.
