Event Details

Thank you for your interest in attending RG’s West Coast & Mountain West Regional Retreat

The retreat will be held from August 26 - August 28, 2016 in Oakland, CA.

This retreat is the second of RG’s new regional leadership gatherings. The retreat is designed for current RG leaders and emerging leaders to build strong connections with other chapters across your region, deepen and share skills through trainings, and engage in political education. The retreat is focused on supporting you to deepen your skills around building strong cohesive chapters, campaign work, multiracial base building, and to create a shared analysis towards taking collective action.

The August gathering will bring together members from LA, Stanford University, the Bay Area, Seattle, Portland, and Denver/Boulder. We look forward to seeing you there! If you have questions, contact your National Organizer or Retreat Organizer Jes Kelley at jes@resourcegeneration.org.

Date: The retreat will begin at 12:30 pm on Friday, August 26 and end at 1:00 pm on Sunday, August 28.

Venue: Unity Council Fruitvale-San Antonio Senior Center, 3301 E. 12th Street, Suite 201 - Building B, Oakland, CA 94601.

Accommodations:  Our site will be day-use, so participants will need arrange their own housing. A travel and housing coordination form will be provided to facilitate car rides and sharing hotel or Airbnb rooms.

Food:  RG will have local caterer provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If you have any dietary restrictions or allergies please let us know in the registration form.

Are you unable to attend the entire weekend?
We strongly believe that participants get the most out of RG retreats when they attend the entire time, and we are also clear that it’s important for full-group dynamics and energy not to have people coming and going from the retreat. If you have extenuating circumstances that you would like to discuss, please contact Sarah at sarah@resourcegeneration.org.

Retreat Costs - In the spirit of transparency and community education, we want to share the costs associated with putting on our regional retreats and gatherings of this scope in general.

We hold an expectation that all of our leaders are dues-paying members. You must be a current member to attend a regional retreat. Once your registration is confirmed, we will send you a payment page, on which there will be options to become a member or renew your membership, if necessary. Many, though not all, memberships expire either 12/31 or 6/30; if you want to find out when your membership expires contact Collette at colette@resourcegeneration.org.

The three major areas of expenses are:

  • Programming - We budgeted for 2 non-staff presenters to offer their expertise at the retreat. It is particularly important to us, as an organization with a constituency of people who have access to wealth, that we truly compensate people for the time and energy it takes to prepare, travel, and present at our retreats to develop young wealthy leaders! We offer each of our presenters between $400 and $1,000 (depending on a variety of factors), as well as covering travel expenses and food/lodging. This is a key way that we are able to support the participation of a broad range of experienced folks, with varied class backgrounds, from across the country.

  • Planning and coordinating - As some of you know from your own experience, planning and coordinating a retreat is a big task! It takes many hours from many people, including members leaders, RG staff, presenters, and retreat center staff to come up with the agenda, develop curriculum, work with facilitators, coordinate logistics, make the food, clean the rooms and more. The majority of this labor is done by RG staff. Often, events and conferences are subsidized by grants or educational institutions and as young people with wealth who are systemically offered free and low-cost experiences, we are often trained not to see the real cost it takes to create and hold transformative community spaces.

  • Venue & Meals - The total cost for a venue and meals for 20-30 people for the weekend is approximately $6,000. As usual, we try to find a space that is simple but comfortable, and a caterer that offers good and healthy food.

How Do Retreat Costs Relate to Registration Fees?

This event is geared towards member leaders, who put in labor and love towards meeting RGs mission year round. This retreat is subsidized in order to honor the work that our member leaders do. Our Making Money Make Change and Transforming Family Philanthropy retreats are budget-neutral, which means that the cost of registration covers the cost of putting on the retreat. In comparison, the cost of the regional retreats is about ¼ of the cost of MMMC or ⅓ of the cost of TFP, and registration fees cover the cost of lodging and food, and a contribution towards planning. The rest of the expense of the retreats is paid for by RG’s organizational fundraising, membership dues (thanks to you, our RG members!).

The cost of registration for RG retreats is comparable to other events in the sector of personal and professional development.  In our effort to make this leadership development training accessible we are offering 3 registration rates that begin at the cost of renting a venue and paying for meals. We recognize that people in the RG community have diverse financial positions, some cannot afford the full cost, while others have the access and ability to cover the cost of this program plus more.  In the spirit of transparency and with a value of agency, we ask that you locate yourself in this scale  and self select what level feels appropriate for you!

Here is a breakdown of the factors that influence a fee structure followed by registration brackets.

Please consider these three registration options and choose the one that feels right to you:

$300 - $549 - Subsidized Registration

This registration rate covers the cost of our venue and meals for the weekend only.  It might be more appropriate for people who currently have limited access to wealth. Many people attending the regional retreat expect to inherit wealth in the future, are partners of people with wealth, are a part of family foundations, or grew up in families with wealth, but might currently have difficulty affording full registration costs.

$550 - $799 - Full Registration

This registration rate covers the cost of our venue, all meals, and a percentage of facilitator and staff compensation and travel. If at all possible, we ask you to pay the full registration costs so that we can make this program sustainable and put it on in future years.

$800 - $1,000 - Solidarity Registration

If you can, please consider paying more than the cost of your own registration, and join us in our efforts to make this retreat a place where young people with wealth not only lead and support each other’s journeys, but also give financial leadership and support to keep this community and this space available. To cover the basics of our budget, we will need about one fourth of attendees to pay the solidarity registration rate.

If cost is a barrier to your participation in the Institute, please let us know and we can discuss options! Email jes@resourcegeneration.org. As always, we highly encourage you to be creative when thinking about funding your participation - -you can pay with a payment plan, get support to ask family members to help you pay, or discuss shared payment with other members or leaders in your chapter.
