Caring for Pregnant Women with Opioid Use Disorder

TARGET AUDIENCE:

This conference is designed for Obstetric Nurses and Social Workers who have an interest in improving their perinatal practice in the care of the pregnant women with opioid use and subsequent reporting requirements.  Registration by  November 16 is required.

8:30-10:00        Pregnancy and the Opioid Crisis: Cara Poland, MD

        Objectives:

  • Understand the basic principles of care for pregnant women with substance use disorders, particularly opioid dependence
  • Learn why a non-judgmental, harm-reduction based and family-centered approach is preferred
  • Incorporate a validated substance use disorder screening tool for use in prenatal care(5P’s) and describe components of SBIRT

10:30-1200     To Report or Not Report: What Mandated Reporters Need to Know: Kevin Bryan and Rachael Wineland

       Objectives:

  • Understand mandated reporting in relationship to maternal substance use and abuse.
  • Understand the MDHHS reporting processes including procedures and their importance

Cara Poland, MD, is a board-certified physician specializing in addiction medicine. Dr. Poland earned her medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. She completed her internal medicine residency at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and her addiction medicine fellowship at Boston University in Massachusetts. Dr. Poland’s clinical interests include safe opioid prescribing, medication assisted treatment of substance use disorders and treatment of females with substance use disorders.


 

Kevin Bryan is a CPS Case Worker at Michigan Department of Human Service. He received his Master of Science in Criminal Justice Administration through Ferris State University.

 

Rachael Wineland is a CPS Policy Analyst. She attended Spring Arbor University and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Family Life Education. Rachael previously worked directly with families as a CPS investigator for 7 years.
