An Invitation to Rest and Delight

Au Sable Institute warmly invites you to attend the Wendell Berry Weekend, a celebration of the writings of Wendell Berry and our shared work together in serving, protecting and restoring God’s earth.

We are thrilled that Dr. Steven Bouma-Prediger will be joining us and will lead two sessions focused on the themes of rest and delight found in Wendell Berry’s writings. Dr. Bouma-Prediger is a professor of religion at Hope College and has written extensively about ecological theology and ethics. He is the author of four books, including For the Beauty of the Earth: A Christian Vision for Creation Care.

Saturday morning’s session will explore our culture’s frantic desire for more stuff. We will discuss Berry’s call to replace selfish ambition with thankful satisfaction. Following this presentation, participants will retreat to the woods for a time of small-group discussion.

The second session will focus on Wendell Berry’s poetry. This interactive session will include Dr. Bouma-Prediger sharing a handful of poems followed by group reflection. There will be time for participants to share their own favorite Berry poem (or one of their own).

Following lunch, the afternoon will offer opportunities to engage in restful and delightful activities prior to an evening dinner on the beach at Big Twin Lake.

Please consider reading the essays “The Gift of Good Land” or “Christianity and the Survival of Creation” prior to arriving on campus. If you have time, reading a few of Berry’s sabbath poems such as those found in the book A Timbered Choir would also be a great way to prepare for our time together.

Wendell Berry will not be in attendance at this event, but we plan to hear his voice through the study of his writings.

CHILDREN
We will offer a program for children ages 5 to 12 during the morning session (9am to 12:30pm) on Saturday.
