Explore Holistic Models of Wellness for Use in Clinical Practice

About this event

Description: This four-hour training reviews events in medicine, psychology and social work that led to the development of holistic models of health and to the current biopsychosocial used in therapy with discussion of the emergence of multidimensional models of wellness. The title of the training is intended to convey an effort to help participants to sort positive models for future research and practice of wellness in therapeutic settings from the now popular use of the term “wellness” in public advertisements and fitness venues.

As a result of attending this program, participants will be able to:

  1. discuss the emergence of the biopsychosocial model of health and the holistic view of health in which key areas of someone’s life may be considered in taking a client’s history and planning for beneficial changes in client behaviors;
  2. describe how to enhance case planning by including multi-dimensional models of wellness as part of biopsychosocial assessment and planning for positive behavior change;
  3. assess client motivation to change maladaptive behaviors to improve positive change;
  4. understand the limitations of current efforts to quantify wellness outcome

Outline: The four hours of this CE training includes the following:

  1. Overview of the emergence of the biopsychosocial model in therapy and the use of a holistic wellness model in assessment and planning for client change. Distinguish wellness models in therapeutic practice versus popular uses of the word wellness as a catch word in fitness programs and advertising.
  2. Exploration of uses of multi-dimensional holistic models of wellness in therapy and counseling including: emotional, social, physical, intellectual, spiritual, occupational, financial and environmental wellness.
  3. Present and discuss measurement of wellness outcomes and where future research is needed.
  4. Conclusion

Participants: People who may enjoy this training either to integrate wellness assessment into their practice or learn more about wellness models include practicing therapists, counselors, nurses, physicians and coaches. Community workers and the general public may enjoy this training to learn more of the history and current research on wellness models for use in therapy.
