Event description

Description

Are you a cancer survivor, currently in treatment for cancer, or a caregiver for someone experiencing cancer? If so, this course is for you.

This course provides a warm and welcoming space for creative expression and meaningful connection. Combining imagination, relaxation, hope, and humor, the class offers an opportunity to experience the proven benefits of creativity, including lowered blood pressure, increased optimism and stress relief. No experience is necessary to participate in this class; the only prerequisite is a willingness to try something new and be part of a group who knows something about the experience of cancer.

The program will be on the following dates from 6:30 pm until 8:30 pm:

  • Thursday, Oct. 5

  • Thursday, Oct. 12

  • Thursday, Oct. 26

All three dates are included in the program fee of $100.

Frequently asked questions about the course:

Do I have to have cancer to attend the course? This group is for cancer survivors, those currently in cancer treatment, and caregivers.

What will happen in the sessions? There are two types of sessions: art and writing.

  • Art-making for Vitality and Health. This class will employ all kinds of art media, one at a time. Each class is for every level. We will draw, paint, work with pastels, make jewelry and create journals and emphasize the qualities that generate vitality. It is expected that each class will be sufficient to complete the project for that session.

  • Writing for Resilience begins with writing prompts. These may be images, quotes or prompts chosen by participants. The enjoyment that comes from simple memories can be captured and shared; participants are often amazed at how comfortable they feel as they find their voice” and share their thoughts.

Will we be talking about cancer? Not necessarily. This is a place to be with others who know how it is to live with cancer. If a need arises to talk about cancer, that need will be honored with care, compassion and respect. However, 90% of the time, the mood is earnest, even lighthearted. Laughter and humor are important aspects of each session.

What if I don’t finish the work in one class? You will be welcome to work on your project at the next class even though others may be working on a new one.
