Event description

Description

Why is economic evaluation needed in public policy contexts? What are the key principles of economic evaluation in public policy contexts? How can we effectively measure wellbeing and other outcomes, including cost effectiveness? What are existing examples of evaluations using various study designs to suit different time horizons and research budgets, including simulation modelling?

Created primarily for analysts, this free one-day workshop draws on expertise from the London School of Economics and the What Works Centre for Wellbeing to help you:

  • outline the principles of economic evaluation with wellbeing as a key measure of success
  • describe how those principles can be turned into practical evaluations
  • provide illustrations across a range of public policy areas.

The sessions will be a mix of presentations, small group sessions and open discussion.

What you'll get from this workshop

By the end of the workshop, participants will have a better understanding of:

  1. the aims and principles of economic evaluation that is intended to inform evidence-based policy or practice discussion
  2. how costs and outcomes (particularly wellbeing) can be measured in practice and then combined to examine ‘value for money’
  3. how to conduct a new evaluation by learning from previous studies that have used a range of methods. The emphasis will be on how to take things forward practically.

Follow-up half-day sessions

To support participants and make the course as useful as possible, there will be up to four half-day follow-up sessions. These will pick up on issues or topics suggested by course participants, with particular emphasis on how new economic evaluation studies (using wellbeing as a key outcome measure) can be taken forward. These will be either face-to-face or online discussions, depending on level of interest and availability.
