This presentation is designed to help new and returning therapists navigate the rules and nuances of working as a contract for the NYC DOE.

About this Event

This presentation is designed to help the new and returning therapist to navigate the rules and nuances of working for the New York City Department of Education as a contractor, to ensure a rewarding professional experience.

Working as a contractor in the NYC school system presents many benefits and challenges for the therapist who chooses to accept a caseload. With the proper understanding of the system, and armed with strategies to address some of the bureaucratic challenges, the school system offers the opportunity to enjoy a flexible schedule, while applying best practice and creative skills.

This course is at no cost for providers currently working with our School-Based Division at Therapeutic Resources.

Topics Covered Include:

-Understanding the roles and responsibilities of the contract therapist in the New York City Department of Education setting.

-Getting started at your school

-Collaboration with parents, teachers, and all team members

-Implementing services

-Documentation requirements including SESIS entries, daily session notes, IEP’s, Present Level of Performance, Goals, Annual Notes

Learning Outcomes:

By the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Identify the role of a contract therapist in the school

2. Identify strategies to support school performance in the school

3. Complete daily SESIS notes, IEP’s, Present Level of Performance, Goals, Annual Notes

4. Complete necessary billing paperwork

About The Presenter:

Christine Knafelc, OTR/L, has been working with the pediatric population for over 20 years and is the Occupational Therapy Clinical Supervisor for Therapeutic Resources School-Based Division. Christine has worked in all facets of pediatrics including early intervention, New York City DOE Schools, Charter Schools, Catholic Schools, and preschools. Her vast experience in pediatrics has enabled her to mentor and coach clinicians transitioning to a school-based setting; spearheading the Pediatric Mentoring Program with Therapeutic Resources.

For New York Licensed Physical Therapists and Physical Therapy Assistants

Therapeutic Resources is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Physical Therapy as an approved provider of physical therapy and physical therapy assistant education. This course is offered for .3 CEU's.

Cancellation Policy: 75% of course fee will be refunded if Therapeutic Resources is notified up to 21 days before the event. In lieu of a monetary refund, Therapeutic Resources also offers a credit for the full amount paid up until 5 days before the event. No refunds or credits are offered after the day of the course. If the course is canceled by Therapeutic Resources due to low registration, illness or cancellation of instructor, or inclement weather. Therapeutic Resources will refund the full amount paid for the course.
