Welcome Blanket Opening Reception

By International Sculpture Center

Overview

Join us at the opening reception for the latest exhibition in the ISC Gallery!

Welcome Blanket is a community-led initiative founded by artist and activist Jayna Zweiman that transforms the traditional act of crafting a blanket into a poignant gesture of hospitality and inclusion for immigrants and refugees arriving in the United States. Together, these contributions form a moving installation that subverts the idea of borders as barriers, instead weaving a powerful symbol of unity and welcome.

Through Welcome Blanket, people already living in the United States are connected with our country’s newest immigrants through stories and handmade blankets, providing both symbolic and literal comfort and warmth.

Participation in this community project is open to anyone throughout the duration of the exhibition. Those wishing to can create a blanket alone or as a group, and are invited to attend maker events, which are published on our website. These blankets will be featured in the exhibition alongside personal notes and shared stories. Following the exhibition, the blankets will be distributed to newly-arrived neighbors.

Please visit our website for more information and to find out how you can get involved.

Following the opening, Welcome Blanket will be on display in the ISC Gallery through March 2026. Blankets will be continually added as they are received.
