Event Details

Wednesday Night Open Mic! A Busboys and  Poetry Event   For two hours audiences can expect a diverse chorus of voices and a vast array of professional spoken word performers, open mic rookies, musicians and a different host every week.

Dwayne B aka the “Crochet Kingpin” is a homegrown DC native poet, activist, break-dancer, and fashion designer. Dwayne has been known to write a pretty good haiku in his day which has lead to him win the Best Haiku Award at the 2011 National Underground Spoken-Word Poetry Awards (NUSPA), and his work to increase HIV awareness through the spoken-word community garnered recognition from the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, BBCAmerica, the Discovery Channel, and the Washington Post. Ultimately his goal is to make the audience feel something, and he’s always met his goal! When not documenting his life through poetic meter, he can be found on the metro making scarves and hats, or singing karaoke.

Ashley August is an actress, playwright, touring spoken word artist, multiple time Grand Slam Champ, hip-hop junkie, professional shower krumper and NYC's 2013 Youth Poet Laureate. As an actress, she got her start at 14 in the off-Broadway production of "Love: A Circus in Three Acts" and has since been featured on such great stages as the Apollo, The Great Hall at Cooper Union, and The Triad Broadway House. She began her poetic journey in the summer of 2009 at Urban Word NYC where she quickly established herself as a rising star when she became a Youth Leadership Board Member, participating in several highly acclaimed competitions, including the Urban Word Grand Slam Finals and the New York Knicks Poetry Slam.

She is the author of two self-exploratory books, “Love Handles” and “Licorice” published by evoL(NYC) and Penmanship Books, respectively. In 2015, Ashley was chosen as one of six writers to be a part of MuMS' (Oz, The Chapelle Show) annual poetic playwriting fellowship, Conscious Language. This year she joined The New York Times, 30 Under 30, Most Influential List! She is the curator and is currently serving as the slam master and host for the Bowery Poetry Slam. August is the 3rd Ranked Woman Poet in the World; Woman of the World Poetry Slam 2017.

August has carved a space for herself in the art world by staying true to her voice and her lived experiences. Embodying the perseverance, charisma, and strength needed to rise against all odds, she is motivated to speak the unsaid truth and push the boundaries of spoken word and theater to realms they've yet to inhabit.
