As injuries due to firearms are common in most areas of the United States, skill in the interpretation of these injuries is vitally important for the practitioner of death and injury investigation.This 2.5 hour webinar will examine the forensic importance of gun shot injuries and will lead the investigator through proper identification and interpretation of gun shot injuries.

Course Objective

Upon the completion of this webinar students will be better equipped to:

  1. Explain the jurisdiction limitations of gun shot injury investigations.
  2. Explain the four aspects of firearm injuries
  3. Identify the four categories of Range of Fire
  4. Explain why bullet trajectory information will assist in the investigation
  5. Explain and identify an abrasion ring
  6. Explain what smoke and soot residue is
  7. Explain stippling and tattooing and what causes it
  8. Explain the different characteristics of an entrance v. an exit wound.
  9. Explain what a percussion injury is and how they are made
  10. Explain what skull and bone beveling is and how it is useful in determining trajectory of bullet.
  11. Explain what Gun Shot Residue, GSR is and why it is important to the investigation

As injuries due to firearms are common in most areas of the United States, skill in the interpretation of these injuries is vitally important for the practitioner of death and injury investigation.This 2.5 hours webinar will examine the forensic importance of gun shot injuries and will lead the investigator through proper identification and interpretation of gun shot injuries. Areas covered are:

  • The characteristics of gun shot wounds
  • Distance of fire indicators
  • Wound assessment
  • Proper documentation such as photographing and forensic wound charting.

This webinar will also give the student an understanding of:

  • Bullet trajectory
  • How to determine bullet trajectory
  • The importance of blood spatter and what it can tell you
  • As well as how to properly communicate scene exam findings to the Medical Examiner and other investigators

Understanding gun shot injuries is vital in conducting a proper investigation. Knowing what distance and range of fire indicators are will assist in determining witness truthfulness as well as helping to determine injury and death etiology.
