Webinar: The Full Power of Diverse Backgrounds by Facebook Product Leader
Event Information
About this Event
In the early days of software product management, PMs came in one or two pretty standard flavors: super technical PMs with computer science degrees (this was the majority), and some mix of marketers and consulting backgrounds (this is an oversimplification, but not a huge one). Today, PMs comes from all walks of life. On my team today, there’s a former UX engineer, a hard science PhD, and a serial founder. On my last team, there was an MBA, an MPH, and a woman who used to work at NASA. Some of the strongest PMs I’ve ever worked with are ones who made mid-career transitions into the discipline. (I admit, I may be biased — I myself transitioned to Product Management 9 years into my career). As their manager, your job is to detect, amplify, and unleash their diverse strengths.
Main Takeaways:
- Detect the value in diversity: Help each PM see the full value and applicability of their unique background
- Amplify unique strengths: Identify opportunities to lean on strengths and build credibility through unique areas of expertise
- Unleash their full potential: Help each PM find their zone of genius and build their impact and careers through a series of small choices that cheat ever so slightly toward passion and away from complacency
