Learn about rapidly changing nursing roles within end-of-life and palliative care, initiatives and changes for the future, and how the bedside nurse can play a lead role in ensuring quality comfort care to the dying patient.

Todd Hultman has come to nursing as a midlife career change. He initially trained as a psychologist and worked with families of handicapped children and youth. Always admiring nursing, at midlife he changed his career and completed a graduate program in acute care advanced practice nursing.  While pursuing his masters degree, he worked as a medical oncology nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he acquired his interest in palliative nursing. His first job as an NP was with a local hospice program where he became board-certified as an advance hospice and palliative nurse. He has since taught graduate nursing at a local state university and returned to MGH where he currently works as a palliative care nurse practitioner in the inpatient consult service. Originally elected to the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association board of directors in 2007, he is currently serving as board president. He has spoken nationally on the topics of psychological aspects of care at end of life and working with difficult family systems in palliative care. He is currently pursuing a line of research in sleep in the acute care setting.
