Qudsia Karimi

Born in Afghanistan, Qudsia Karimi was only 2 months old when her family left for Iran due to war. She has a double degree in Political Science at the University of British Columbia. She has also translated and interpreted numerous publications, flyers, books and documents for government bodies and NGOs such as UNICEF, multicultural associations in Canada, Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, Immigrant Services Society to BC, and The University of British Columbia. She currently works for Canada’s Ministry of Human Services as a career and employment consultant.

John H. McGlynn

John H. McGlynn is a founder and the Director of Publications of the Lontar Foundation, a not-for-profit publishing house based in Jakarta, Indonesia. Through Lontar, McGlynn has ushered into print more than 200 books on Indonesian literature and culture and as the translator of several dozen book-length titles himself, he has garnered much international praise for his work—most recently for his translation of The Sea Speaks His Name, a historical novel by Leila S. Chudori, published earlier this year by Singapore-based Penguin Southeast Asia.

Foo Yong Xiang

Yong Xiang is a History major in NUS with a minor in Translation Studies. His journey into freelance translation began in 2016 when he was introduced to a China-based translation company. Yong Xiang has since worked on a web novel translation and served as a freelance interpreter and translator both overseas and in Singapore. He was awarded the MCI Information Service (Translation) Mid-Term Scholarship in mid-2020. He looks forward to working as a government translator after graduation and hopes this will allow him to translate his dream into reality.

Bashir Basalamah

Bashir Basalamah first started out as staff interpreter at the Judiciary and then at the Parliament of Singapore. Since leaving the civil service to turn freelance, he has helped found two e-forums on Indonesian and Malay translation, gained professional accreditations from NAATI (Australia), membership of T&I associations, and an MAS in Interpreter Training from Geneva. But what he values most are the intangibles: the fellowship of amazing colleagues from Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and further afield, as well as opportunities to share his knowledge with new and aspiring translators and interpreters.
