Event description

Are you intrigued - perhaps even tempted - by the notion of extreme early retirement?

FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) entered the zeitgeist in the last year, though the movement has been slowly growing for decades now, ever since Your Money or Your Life was published in 1992. The movement emphasizes frugality, high savings rates, and real do-it-yourself-ing in most aspects of life. There’s a lot to love in those fundamentals, but the FIRE movement has also been criticized for being the domain of the high-income, privileged, lucky few.

What should you take away from the FIRE lifestyle and philosophy? If you want to pursue FIRE, what should your first steps be? Does it require a stupid high income? What if you live in a high-cost of living area or have children? What if you actually love your career?

In this webinar, a financial planner will moderate a discussion with two Tech Ladies who can speak to their own real-life experiences pursuing FIRE. Join us for this webinar and you’ll walk away with a better understanding of both the movement and the personal realities of pursuing FIRE.

Meg Bartelt, CFP®, MSFP, is the founder of Flow Financial Planning, LLC, a virtual, fee-only financial planning practice that specializes in helping women in tech cultivate financial and professional strength.

With multiple goals, stock options and RSUs, complicated taxes, and so on, personal finance can easily overwhelm even the smartest, most organized person. Meg helps her clients clarify their goals and priorities, cultivate professional connections, understand how their finances work, and be more confident that they're doing the right thing with their money and opportunities.

The years before Flow featured a career as a technical writer in the Bay Area, one marriage, 2 kids, 2 cross-country moves, and work in two fee-only financial advisory firms in Southeastern Virginia. She and her family now live and eat kale in Bellingham, WA. ("I can see Canada from my front porch!")

Maddie is a reformed finance professional turned techie. Self described as a poor but financially savvy immigrant kid who grew up in Canada, her FIRE journey started early with multiple side hustles in the neighborhood and day trading in high-school and university.

After passing her CFA L3, a stint in finance as a VC, founding multiple startups with limited success as a female non-technical founder, teaching herself to code, and working as a developer in the crypto then AI field, Maddy’s current FIRE project involves building and moving into a self-converted cargo van to reduce burn/possessions and building diversified income streams.

She is passionate about financial and coding literacy for students and the underserved. Her current hobbies are flying airplanes and learning about cars + carpentry.

Long passionate about FIRE, Felicity has written about “frugality, early retirement, and being happy” on her blog, Fetching Financial Freedom, for several years. She, her partner, Fergus, and Fluffster the Golden Retriever aim to “retire” in 2019, at the ages of 29 and 35. They all recently moved from the Greater Boston Area to Seattle.

Felicity is an electrical engineer, crafty maven, and amateur financial planner. Fergus is a software engineer, frugal chef extraordinaire, and puppy wrangler. Fluffster is responsible for covering their apartment in fur.
