About this Event

TryTank presents: Faith in the future

What is the church of the future? Will church—as we know it—even exist? Author and noted futurist Bob Johansen, a distinguished fellow with the Institute for the Future, will join Dr. Lisa Kimball, the Associate Dean of Lifelong Learning at Virginia Theological Seminary to look at current trends, beyond those trends, possible disruptions, and why a new way of thinking is required for leaders of the church. Rather than a fearful future, we should embrace it as an opportunity for new spectrums of meaning making. It’ll be a fascinating, yet practical, conversation where your questions will also be considered.

Bob Johansen is a distinguished fellow with the Institute for the Future in Silicon Valley. For more than 30 years, Bob has helped organizations around the world prepare for and shape the future, including corporations such as P&G, Walmart, United Rentals, and GlaxoSmithKline, as well as a range of major universities and nonprofits.

The author or co-author of twelve books, including the best-selling Get There Early: Sensing the Future to Compete in the Present, Leaders Make the Future, and The New Leadership Literacies: Thriving in a Future of Extreme Disruption and Distributed Everything. He is currently writing a new book that will be out in early 2020 called Full-Spectrum Thinking: Escaping the Boxes in a Post-Categorical Future. Bob’s books are used widely in corporations, universities, nonprofits, and at the Army War College.

Bob holds a B.S. from the University of Illinois, which he attended on a basketball scholarship, and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University—as well as a master’s degree that focused on world religions.

Elisabeth (Lisa) M. Kimball, Ph.D. is the Associate Dean of Lifelong Learning and the James Maxwell Professor of Lifelong Christian Formation. She joined the VTS faculty in 2009. Her areas of expertise include human development, experiential learning, faith formation, church history, and popular culture, adult formation, lay ministry development, adolescent spiritual development, and program evaluation.

Since joining the Practical Theology faculty at VTS, Dr. Kimball has focused her teaching and research on lifelong, life-wide, and life-deep discipleship and Christian vocation in contemporary, global and post institutional contexts. She is a passionate advocate for lay ministry, the full inclusion of all generations, digital literacy, and leaders who are confident teachers of the faith.

In addition to frequent keynote presentations (diocesan conventions, clergy conferences, religious education guilds, and networks), Dr. Kimball's commitment to the wider church currently includes serving as Chair of the Standing Committee on Formation and Ministry of the Baptized; co-founding of the Episcopal Confirmation Collaborative; serving on the Way of Love resource development team; and being the Episcopal representative on the Journey to Baptismal Living faculty team writing an ecumenical rite for the catechumenate. She was recently recognized by the board of Episcopal Camps and Conference Centers for her dedication to building faith forming immersive experiences.
