Event Details

As the Maryland Nonprofits Standards for Excellence: An Ethics and Accountability Code for the Nonprofit Sector states, “Nonprofits should have a written conflict of interest policy and statement. These should be applicable to board members and staff, as well as volunteers who have significant, independent decision-making authority regarding the resources of the organization.”  The Standards for Excellence goes on to state that, “The policy and statement should be executed by covered individuals, both at the time of the individual's initial affiliation with the organization and at least annually thereafter.”  This 90-minute webinar will explore why conflict of interest policies are essential tools for nonprofits, what are some of the most common actions that raise conflict of interest concerns, what should be included in a conflict of interest policy and statement, and how best to implement a conflict of interest policy in your organization.

Co-Presenter: Amy Coates Madsen is the Director of the Standards for Excellence Institute, a national initiative to promote the highest standards of ethics and accountability in nonprofit governance, management, and operations, and to facilitate adherence to standards by all organizations. The Standards for Excellence Institute is a program of the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations where Amy has served for more than 18 years. Amy is responsible for coordinating all aspects of the association’s comprehensive ethics and accountability program and efforts to replicate the program nationally. She serves as a frequent trainer and writer in the areas of board conduct, program evaluation, program replication, fundraising ethics and regulation, and nonprofit management. She has taught courses on nonprofit ethics and accountability at the Johns Hopkins Institute for Policy Studies Certificate Program on Nonprofit Management and has guest lectured at other colleges and universities as well. She has held positions at the Trenton lobbying firm of the Princeton Public Affairs Group, and the Public Policy Liaison Unit at the world headquarters of Catholic Relief Services. Amy received her Master of Arts in Policy Studies degree from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland and her Bachelor’s degree from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Co-Presenter: Padraic (“Paddy”) McSherry Morton, Consulting Attorney and Fiscal Sponsorship Program Director, has been providing legal services to Maryland Nonprofits’ members since 2002.  Prior to her work with Maryland Nonprofits, Ms. Morton was an Associate with Whiteford, Taylor & Preston, LLP and a Law Clerk to the Honorable William M. Nickerson of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland.  Legal consulting includes startup corporate work, transactions, contracts, mergers and structural reorganization.
