What is ASD? Nomenclature for a diagnosis of autism or related disorder has changed over time. What is the spectrum of autism? What are some common characteristics to look for when considering assessment for autism? This webinar will inform the nurse of assessment data and diagnostic criteria as per the DSM when considering an autism spectrum disorder.

This presentation will provide you with information about assessment and diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). More specifically, the program will address prevalence and incidence of ASD, terminology associated with ASD and issues of comorbidity. A theoretical framework of the DSM 5 will guide the understanding of the issues presented.
Upon completion, participants will be able to do the following:
1. Identify the spectrum of autism
2. Discuss two components of the diagnosis
3. Identify at least three common characteristics of autism
Oren Shtayermman, PhD joined the faculty of New York Institute of Technology, School of Health Professions as an Assistant Professor in Mental Health Counseling in 2008. Dr. Shtayermman earned his BSW in Social Work from Haifa University, Israel, his MSW in Social Work from New York University and his PhD from Fordham University. Dr. Shtayermman's research focuses on mental health issues among adolescents and young adults, autism spectrum disorders, comorbid disorders, and the impact autism spectrum disorders has on family members. Dr. Shtayermman received an Institutional Support of Research and Creativity grant to begin a longitudinal study that will examined the distal and proximal risk factors for suicidal ideation among college students. Dr. Shtayermman is a regular contributor to Autism Spectrum News and Mental Health News. Since 2002, when Dr. Shtayermman began his doctorate education, he has been conducting both qualitative and quantitative research. His studies included exploring needs and challenges of parents caring for a child with Asperger's Syndrome (AS), exploring suicidal ideation and DSM-IV-TR related disorders among individuals with Asperger's Syndrome (AS), a longitudinal study exploring the risk factors for suicide among college students and levels of stress and marital satisfaction among parents caring for a child with autism spectrum disorders. In addition, Dr. Shtayermman also served as a co-investigator on a study conducted by the Department of Physician Assistant Studies looking at prescription stimulants used to enhance academic performance in healthcare programs. Dr. Shtayermman has consistently been involved in research examining disabilities and their impact on individuals and their environment. In the past 6 years, Dr. Shtayermman presented in 17 international and national conferences, published over a dozen peer reviewed papers, 9 book reviews, 6 book chapters and entries to the encyclopedia of autism, and over 20 modules for continuing education credits.

With a score of 75% or better and completing the evaluation, you may immediately print your CE certificate of completion or save a pdf of it for your records. You may also request a copy to be sent to you by mail. If your score is less than the passing score of 75%, you may retake the test.
