  CONTENT SUMMARY

This webinar will discuss survival steps attendees can take in the event of an active shooter event occurring at the workplace. The topics covered will include: developing a mindset of action and survival during active shooter incidents, preparing for critical incidents in the workplace, actions to take in active shooter situations, law enforcement response to critical incidents and steps to take when confronted by first responders, emergency action plans in healthcare facilities, and characteristics of active shooter situations.

  LEARNING OBJECTIVES


The goal of this presentation is to outline specific, easy-to-remember objectives for healthcare providers to learn in response to an active shooter incident. In addition, by increasing awareness and discussing various conditions and scenarios, individual facilities can develop unique response plans to address this potential danger.

Upon completion, learners will be able to: 

1. Review statistics and trends on active shooter incidents

2. Explain the natural responses of the human body when exposed to danger

3. Discuss how members of the interprofessional team can conduct on site assessments and prepare for environmental threats

4. Review strategies on fighting back if the situation dictates

5. Evaluate and discuss the Run, Hide, Fight method of addressing active shooters and review ways in which training can be incorporated into institution protocols

 

  SPEAKERS

Dave Vialpando, BS, MBA is a thirty-seven year law enforcement veteran, having served as a police officer in Richmond, California, and for twenty-seven years as a Special Agent with the California Attorney General's Department of Justice (DOJ) where he supervised various drug trafficking and violent crime units as well as the Bureau of Gambling Control where he served as the Special Agent-in-Charge of the Bureau's southern California offices. Upon retirement in 2012, Mr. Vialpando obtained his California Private Investigator's license and he currently serves as President and CEO of the Institute for Criminal Justice Training, the Chairman of the Santa Ysabel Tribal Gaming Commission, for the Iipay Nation of Santa Ysabel, as well as the Executive Director of the Santa Ysabel Tribal Cannabis Regulatory Agency.

Les Stanley left law enformcement in 1995 to pursue a career in tribal gaming regulation for the Colorado River Indian Tribes (CRIT). He was promoted to Executive Director in August 1998 after performing duties as a Gaming Inspector, Background Investigator and Interim Chief of Inspectors. In 2001, Director Stanley became a Gaming Commissioner for the Cahuilla Tribe in Southern California then Executive Director to the Barona Band of Mission Indians. Director Stanley is currently the Executive Director for the Rincon Gaming Commission, Vice Chairman for NIGA's Tribal Gaming Protection Network Board, and Treasurer of the National Tribal Gaming Commissions/Regulators (NTGCR) Board.

Andrew Hofstetter is an enrolled Tribal Member of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. He has served in tribal casino operations and tribal regulation since 1994. Mr. Hofstetter is currently employed by BlueBird, CPAs, a Reno-based CPA firm providing auditing, consulting and training services to Native American Tribes. Over the years he has worked for various tribes, including his own tribe as a Commissioner, and Chairman. In 2010, Mr. Hofstetter accepted an appointment to the Tribal Gaming Protection Network (TGPN) and in November of 2015, Mr. Hostetter was appointed Chairman. He helped form the National Indian Casino Safety Association (NICSA) under the TGPN and has been involved in education and training on a national level regarding Human Trafficking and Active Shooter. Recently, Mr. Hostetter accepted an appointment to the University of Las Vegas (UNLV) Advisory Board of Directors, for the UNLV Gaming Program.

Edie Ilko graduated law school and clerked for the San Diego County Public Defenders Office and worked for the Superior Court's Small Claims division. He worked for seven years as Risk and Safety Manager for Pala Casino, leading security, threat assessment, active shooter training and an injury reduction safety campaign that reduced guest and employee injury claims by 30%. In 2015, Mr. Ilko became Security Claims Manager to Sycuan Casino as well as chair to the Safety Committee. Mr. Ilko is a trainer and speaker on Active Shooters, Human Trafficking, OSHA, Tort claims, Workers Comp and Emergency Preparedness. In 2016, he became an authorized OSHA trainer and was appointed Chairman of the National Indian Casino Safety Association (NICSA). In 2017 he became the newest board member of the Tribal Gaming Protection Network (TGPN), a subsidiary of the National Indian Gaming Association.
