The Regional System of District & School Support - Region 4 Presents:

Web Tools for STEM Instruction: All About Desmos

Desmos wants to help every student learn math and love learning math. But “every student” is a lot of students so we create digital math tools and let the Internet take them to anyone who wants them.

Workshop description:

This is a "bring your own device" event. Using a laptop during this event will provide the best experience for participants.

Desmos is next-level instruction that can be used in your classroom tomorrow!

Rarely, an instructional tool will be instantly effective. More rarely than that, it’s used by tens of thousands of STEM teachers who freely share. Desmos is more than an online graphing calculator; the staff has built a library of ready-made, self-directed student experiences. Come with a device, leave with a stuffed backpack that will change the way we teach STEM classes.

Bring your own device, take a tour of Desmos and explore its power! There is something for everybody in this full-day workshop led by two Google Certified Innovators.

Objectives:

  1. Experience instruction that attracts, inspires, motivates, and engages students as they apply practical skills to real world tasks.
  2. Explore and consider high-interest STEM application Desmos.
  3. Learn to create real-world, standards-aligned experiences that draw students into standards-aligned class content.
  4. Engage in professional learning that promotes technology-supported practices of 21st Century classrooms.
  5. Rediscover your passion for teaching!

This is a "bring your own device" event. Using a laptop during this event will provide the best experience for participants.

John Stevens is an educational technology coach for Chaffey Joint Union High School District who has also taught high school Geometry, Algebra 1, middle school Math, Service Learning, and Robotics, Engineering, and Design since 2006. He has served as the go-to guy for trying new, crazy, and often untested ideas to see how well they will work.

John co-founded and moderates #CAedchat, the weekly teacher Twitter chat for the state of California. He also is the co-founder and organizer of EdCamp Palm Springs, the first in the area. In his free time that doesn’t exist, he runs a site called Would You Rather? which is dedicated to getting students talking about math. He is an author of Flipping 2.0, a resource that helps teachers take the flipped classroom to the next level. During recent summers, John has had the honor of presenting at CUE Rockstar events in California and various technology and math conferences. John blogs at fishing4tech.com and createdappsinclass.com. His latest adventure has led him into the world of 3D-printing, designing lesson plans and curricula forAirWolf3D. Follow him @jstevens009 or email him at stevens009@gmail.com

Matt Vaudrey is the Educational Technology Coach for Bonita Unified School District who has taught 7th grade, seniors, and most math classes between those grade-levels. Recently, his school tagged him to pilot a 1:1 iPad program for intervention students. With no curriculum, Matt sought ways to make math meaningful for his students using free technologies available.

Matt blogs at MrVaudrey.com, connects with educators across the world on Twitter, and presents at conferences throughout California. Taking any opportunity to "talk shop" with other teachers, his Mullet Ratio is used (and improved) by teachers around the world.

No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 requires each state to establish a statewide system of intensive and sustained support and improvement for local education agencies and schools receiving Title I funding to increase opportunities for all students to meet state academic content and achievement standards. As a result, the Regional System of District and School Support (RSDSS) was established, and partners with the California Department of Education (CDE), the Comprehensive Assistance Center, and county offices of education to form the Statewide System of School Support (S4) and satisfy the requirements of NCLB. The RSDSS of Region 4 provides leadership, resources, and technical assistance to the schools, districts, and county offices of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo and Solano in order to increase their collective capacity to support students in meeting or exceeding the state's academic content standards.
